Unstitched dress materials, block-printed by hand in Bagru since 1974. Molten wax laid on cotton, dipped in natural dye, cracked, boiled clean — the veining you see is the craft signing its own name.

New this fortnight

Small lots, printed and dried over the last two weeks. When a lot sells out, that exact shade is gone.

How it is made

Four hands, four days,
one length of cloth

The block is cut
01Sheesham wood · 11 days
01

The block is cut

A single motif is carved into seasoned sheesham wood, in reverse, by hand. A complex jaal can take a carver eleven days. We still print from blocks cut in 1998 — they wear softer with age, and the print gets warmer for it.

02

Molten wax is laid

Beeswax and paraffin are held at exactly 62°C. Too cool and the wax sits on the surface; too hot and it bleeds past the motif. The printer registers each stamp by eye against the last — three metres, several hundred impressions, no guides.

03

Into the dye vat

The waxed length goes into a cold natural bath — indigo, madder, pomegranate rind, turmeric. Wax repels the dye and holds the motif white. Deeper shades are simply more dips: our indigo goes in twice, sometimes three times.

04

Cracked, boiled, dried

The dried wax is crushed so dye seeps into the fractures — that fine veining is the signature of true batik. Then boiling water lifts the wax away, the cloth is river-rinsed and sun-dried on the roof. Nothing about this can be hurried.

Why buy from the shed

What a mill can't copy

Screen printing can imitate the motif. It cannot imitate wax that cracked differently on every metre.

01
No middlemen
We are the manufacturer. The price you see is the shed price plus shipping — there is no distributor margin folded in.
02
Printed by name
Every length carries the initials of the printer who stamped it. Forty-one artisans, paid by the piece at above-market rates, year-round.
03
Azo-free, always
Indigo, madder root, pomegranate rind, turmeric. Wastewater is settled and filtered before it leaves the compound.
04
Inspected, then packed
Each piece is measured, checked against the light and folded into cotton. If a length fails, it never reaches the site.

You can see the fine veining where the wax cracked in the dye bath. This is not a screen print pretending to be batik — I have bought enough of those to know the difference immediately.
